About Us
Better Living for Texans (BLT) is a nutrition education program for adults and children that are SNAP participants and program eligible. The BLT program helps people make healthy meals, improve their physical fitness, save money at the grocery store, grow their own foods, and adopt better food safety habits.
BLT Vision – Creating opportunities, changing lives
BLT Mission – We provide research and evidence-based nutrition, health and wellness knowledge to empower individuals, families, and communities to make positive changes for healthier lives
Why BLT?
Statistics show that 1 out of every 6 Texans struggle with food insecurity and hunger and eat less than the daily recommended allowance of fruits and vegetables. In addition, Texas children and adults are less physically active than recommended.
What does BLT do?
BLT helps families make better choices with their limited resources. To do so, we provide research-based nutrition programs that are cost-free and close to home.
BLT programs will help participants:
- Increase fruit and vegetable consumption
- Make healthy menu choices
- Save money at the grocery store
- Learn about MyPlate
- Increase physical activity in adults and children
What else does it do?
Walk Across Texas – For those considering how to become more physically active, walking across Texas could be a good place to start according to research from the Family & Community Health Unit of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The study now published in BMC Public Health confirmed the effectiveness of the Walk Across Texas! Program to increase and maintain physical activity over 8-weeks, even in inactive or low-active participants.
Fresh Start to a Healthier You! -Introduces you to a variety of nutrition concepts including eating more fruits and vegetables, saving more at the grocery store, and taking steps to bring more of a health-oriented balance to your daily life through an educational series. It has been welcomed by participants and is making a positive impact in an area where nutrition education is an important part of efforts to strengthen the community.
Learn Grow Eat Go – A program combining academic, gardening, nutrient-dense food experiences, physical activity, and school & family engagement.
